April 19, 1995

At 9:01AM CST I was a senior in college, working for the Dean of Student’s office at Texas Tech University when I heard the Executive Assistant to the dean say something in her office, a word or two of shock. She told us we needed to come into her office. She wheeled the television in from the conference room and turned the television on. What we saw was shocking.

Smoke and ash rose from the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, just a few hundred miles from where we were at the time. This was long before university/school lock down’s. I remember the city was on alert, and the Texas borders were watching for anyone suspicious coming from Oklahoma to Texas in the three or four hours following the bombing.

We were in utter shock. We spent the day watching the television until tornado warnings started flashing on the screen for Lubbock. We had to evacuate to the stairwells five times that day. The day was filled with sadness, and fear for all of us.

My aunt Mary who was a nurse in Ada, OK, a mere 45 minutes from Oklahoma City went to OKC to aid the medical staff tending to the survivors. Today I remember what happened 15 years ago, and still cry thinking that someone from the United States could take so many lives for, what seems, no reason at all but the hatred of government establishment, only to kill children in the process.

About Kari

I live in the Capital Region of NY, work for NYS, and am just beginning to blog. I was recently diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, so that's going to take up some content. I've been writing for as long as I can remember, and I am an opinionated person. Thus there will be some items that burn me up, that I simply want to play devil's advocate, or daily/personal items. I also Tweet (@Marilyth) when the mood strikes me in 140 characters or less. I'm doing this for fun, and I hope other appreciate the information and contribute!

  1. How soon we forget. It seems like so long ago, but for reasons too numerous to mention it deserves to be burned in our memories.

    Thank you for posting this.

Wow! I can’t believe it’s been 15 years! It seems like just yesterday I was sitting watching it on TV out in Utica….
